Dentists will often will get calls like this from worried parents.
GOOD NEWS: There is nothing wrong with your child's teeth. Let's talk about pediatric tooth eruption. Our first adult teeth to erupt in the place of baby teeth are the lower front incisors. The adult teeth often will erupt to the tongue side of the baby teeth. Do not panic! Usually the tongue is a strong enough muscle to move the adult teeth forward and cause the baby incisors to fall out. This forward movement is less likely to happen if your child's baby teeth are already significantly crowded. If so, there may not be enough room in the dental arch for these beautifully large adult teeth to fit. In some cases the baby teeth need to be wiggled out by the dentist to allow the adult tooth to move forward. If your child needs to have a couple teeth wiggled out, your dentist will make sure they are very comfortable and thta it is QUICK! Your dental provider will start evaluating your little one's orthodontic status from an early age, so if there is crowding or other concerns, you should already know about them and maybe even be in early interceptive orthodontics if need be.
